Uniforms

The uniform ("gi" -  rhymes with "key") consists of a black top, black pants, and, for beginners, a White Belt.

In the Junior Division, uniforms are not required until the student reaches the 2nd bar Advanced White Belt rank.

In the Adult Division, uniforms are required prior to earning the rank of Yellow Belt.

Uniform colors other than black, and uniforms with logos from martial arts organizations other than Winged Dragon, are not allowed in our classes.

Two additions to the basic uniform are allowed.  The American Flag emblem is worn on the upper left sleeve.  The Winged Dragon Karate Club patch is worn over the left breast.

NOTEUniform pants are not to be cuffed or pegged. Pants that are too long should be properly hemmed to prevent the student  from tripping and to allow for future growth.

Students who do not yet own a gi should wear comfortable, loose fitting clothing that allows freedom of movement.  Tops should be PLAIN white or black tee shirts or sweatshirts.  Club logo tee shirts and sweatshirts are also permitted.

How to Tie the Gi and Karate Belt

Refer to Figure 1 and the explanations below for assistance in tying the gi top and belt.

The gi pants are usually furnished with an elastic waistband and a drawstring, which is tied in front to hold the pants up.

The gi top has four strings sewn on which are used to tie it.

1.  From the wearer's viewpoint, there is a right front string, a right rear (or outside) string, a left front string, and a left rear (or inside) string.

2.  Grab the right front string with your right hand and the left rear (or inside) string with your left hand.  Wrapping the right half of the gi top against your upper body, tie a bow with the right front string and the left rear string.

3.  Grab the left front string with your left hand and the right rear (or outside) string with your right hand.  Wrapping the left half of the gi top over top the right side, tie a bow with the left front string and the right rear string.

You are now ready to tie the belt.

The belt is looped around your waist and tied in front in a square knot according to the following procedure:

4.  Fold your belt in half to find the center

5.  Holding the belt with both hands in front of your body, place the center of the belt at the center of your waist

6.  Wrap the belt around your waist, crossing it behind you, and bringing the two ends in front of your body again

7.  Cross the belt in front of you

8.  Tuck the end of the belt that is in your right hand completely under the section of belt around your waist and pull that end straight up, while pulling the end in your left hand straight down

9 thru 11.  Using the two ends of the belt, tie a square knot.

12.  The ends of your belt should be even in length after the belt is tied.  When tied,  any bars on the belt should be on the wearer's left side.
